The something out of nothing question may be one that certain sorts of philosophers are prepared to consider...but this isnt the only example of what I'd call a theological itch. And Turner in the passage I quote doesnt specify that topic anyway. I'd want to suggest that philosophy as construed at present by the academy isnt very open at all to itching in other areas where theology might come into play. The Charles Taylor book A Secular Age picks up on some of this, as does the rather bombastic John Milbank.Gavin McChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13456676589713605879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-79448962485953648642010-12-06T10:12:28.092+00:002010-12-06T10:12:28.092+00:00"And this is so even while the most collegiat..."And this is so even while the most collegiate support for the atheist worldview is available among friendly peers who would also sweep a certain kind of question under the carpet as part of the intellectual training in rationality and being civilized which Good Atheist Thought relies upon."

This is myth-making.

http://stephenlaw.blogspot.com/2008/05/why-is-there-anything-at-all.html

http://stephenlaw.blogspot.com/2009/09/apophatic-theologian.htmlstephen lawhttp://www.stephenlaw.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-22843274558784216642009-10-06T23:27:48.246+01:002009-10-06T23:27:48.246+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.Gavin McChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13456676589713605879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-41959327262776597242009-05-18T18:01:00.000+01:002009-05-18T18:01:00.000+01:00Perhaps my summer reading list? :)Perhaps my summer reading list? :)Chlobarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00346862158670207279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-36995166501053018072009-01-26T05:13:00.000+00:002009-01-26T05:13:00.000+00:00http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YsIdTcTVaNY&feat...http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YsIdTcTVaNY&feature=related

I've been interested to learn that NT Wright argues something very similar in one of his new books...Gavin McChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13456676589713605879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-67669440719575062452009-01-13T11:55:00.000+00:002009-01-13T11:55:00.000+00:00Hear hear.Hear hear.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-4632321618126637132008-12-17T00:34:00.000+00:002008-12-17T00:34:00.000+00:00That would seem a very sensible line to take, I th...That would seem a very sensible line to take, I think. Check out the following words from the article I posted the link to in my first comment. It's definitely worth reading the whole way through, by the way, as the song has to be seen within the context of the album as a whole...

'Viva la Vida’s eighth track, “Violet Hill,” is undoubtedly its boldest and most energetic. In the same interview with The Times, Martin says in this song he wanted to “just tell it how it is.” His frankness comes through, as the song drives home the theme of living in a chaotic and disordered world, recalling a “long and dark December” in the opening line. He goes on to speak of a future “architectured / by a carnival of idiots on show” and of “When the banks became cathedrals / and the fog / became God.” Throughout all this, Martin repeatedly implores “If you love me / won’t you let me know?” Put another way, “I don’t want to be a soldier / that a captain of some sinking ship / would stow, far below.” “Violet Hill” is despairing of how corrupted our world has become, wondering aloud if God is still with us and asking for a reminder of His love. We don’t want to feel like we are polishing the brass on a sinking ship for no reason, that we have been forgotten in our fight against a seemingly endless supply of evil'.

Here's the link again:
http://www.protestantpontifications.com/?p=650#comment-853Gavin McChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13456676589713605879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-23691071829738783402008-12-16T18:09:00.000+00:002008-12-16T18:09:00.000+00:00p.s. on "Violet Hill"p.s. on "Violet Hill"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-63153538302651980042008-12-16T18:08:00.000+00:002008-12-16T18:08:00.000+00:00I was thinking a similar thing about Coldplay the ...I was thinking a similar thing about Coldplay the other day.

Is Martin's "if you love me/ won't you let me know" an appeal to an unseen god to reveal himself?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-84492301361519302732008-12-13T15:29:00.000+00:002008-12-13T15:29:00.000+00:00Drawing on our conversation about lyrics I see!Drawing on our conversation about lyrics I see!Chlobarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00346862158670207279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840782778014571162.post-16862002581705814522008-12-10T04:33:00.000+00:002008-12-10T04:33:00.000+00:00Note further this excellent discussion I just disc...Note further this excellent discussion I just discovered of the Christian undercurrents which are argued to flow through Coldplay's latest album as a whole:

http://www.protestantpontifications.com/?p=650#comment-853Gavin McChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13456676589713605879noreply@blogger.com
